No Longer a Zombie Christian

Posted on October 29, 2015October 26, 2015

zombie Christian 2Have you been intrigued by the Zombie series? We have been talking about how Jesus came to bring us from death to life. Maybe you “came to life” years ago and have called yourself a Christian as long as you can remember.

My question for you (and me) is this:

“Are we living like it?”

Some of us have new life, but we are still living out the old life. We are “Zombie Christians.” Paul has some important words for us “living dead:”

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. (Romans 6)

A Zombie-Christian is a person who claims to follow Christ, but is actually living a dead and sinful life, like those who don’t know Jesus. Of course, even Christians will slip up into sin, but there is a difference between repentant heart and a lifestyle of dead-living.

Some Zombie-Christians are like the slow moving undead from old movies (or Scooby Doo). We know what is right, but we are not quick to obey. We live a little in the world (chew on a brain here), then try to follow the rules again (gnaw on an arm there), but mostly just kind of float on by, moaning as we go.

At other times, we are the full blown zombie apocalypse of World War Z. Clambering on top of one another to eat up as much of this dead-life we can get. We accepted Jesus sure, and we know we will “make it to heaven.” But now is the time to get the fun in. All of our enthusiasm is sucked up by the world. We can’t get enough of living like the old self.

If you think you might be a Zombie Christian, Read Romans 6 from the Bible this week. Talk to God about it. Talk to a friend, your pastor, or your BCM Director. God has given you life to live free and alive!

Let us repent from being Zombie Christians. Let us show the world that we have an abundant and free life in Christ.

When Jesus died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God. So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus. Romans 6:10-11
