Have you ever let fear clutter your heart?
We have 1 valentine’s balloon left. It’s the last of the “heart clutter” that invaded our home this month.
Sadly, I was not as efficient with the space in my soul.
The Problem: Heart Clutter
My heart is cluttered with fear. I can tell because I am:
- striving instead of resting
- counting my losses instead of blessings
- feeling hopeless despite a wealth of help both from the Lord and my community
The Solution: Declutter the Fear
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” (1 John 4:18)
I tell my kids that sticky valentine candy wrappers belong in the trash, not on the table (or couch, or dresser, etc.). Fear is the same. It has no place in our hearts.
The heart gets decluttered of fear—and its symptoms—when we… “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1)
But how? How do we “see this great love” which “casts out fear” so we can “love others as God has loved us”?
Application: 5 Practical Ideas
- Investigate. As you read Scripture, make a list of all the ways God loves you. I found over 40 in 1st John alone.
- Saturate. “See” God’s great love by listening to worship music.
- Collaborate. Don’t isolate! Overcome obstacles like distraction, laziness, and excuses. Meet with a believer and remind each other of truth!
- Meditate. Take an hour to dwell on how you are loved by God.
- Celebrate! Notice how others are encountering God’s love and cheer them on.
How about you?
How do you see heart-clutter (like fear) showing up in your life? When will you take time this week to engage in perfect love that casts out fear?
